Smart-Deal: Ireland Air and Car from 9

Consistent with our recent tendency to look at air fares to show you how good a flat rate offer can be in absolute terms, the cost saving on this intelligent offer from Aer Lingus is a true winner: $399 for outward and return flights to Ireland, plus one car hire for a whole weekend. With a separate booking, the return flight to Dublin or Shannon, e.g. from New York City in November, begins between $700 and $900.

Even if you don't have room to sleep for free at nights, Ireland is the country of the cosy B&B, so a cosy nightly rate from $69 (if you make your reservation through the Aer Lingus Vacation Store). There' s a lot to do, whether you're flying to Dublin or Shannon.

Situated on the western coastline of Ireland, not far from Shannon International Airports, make a breathtaking stop at the Cliffs of Moher. From Shannon to Galway, Ireland's most artistic town, you can buy a ring of clothes from the maker of the Irish jewel, Thomas Dillon's. Sojourns in or near Dublin can take you within reach of the ghostly heathen- Celtic pre-historic Newgrange.

Be in Dublin for at least a few nights to discover the Book of Kells at Trinity College, walk the trail of James Joyce (and other Dublin Writers Museum scribes) and enjoy real life tunes and crack in a nearby public cafe.

Round trip flight from New York or Boston to Dublin or Shannon (optional); airlines supplement for gasoline; seven day economical car-rentals. Departure on other weekdays is possible, but will be more costly; there are no blackouts. Hire car updates are also possible; ask when making your reservation.
