Monday, January 31, 2000 at 2:44 a.m. The nation's most popular online tour operator has purchased Travelscape.com, headquartered in Las Vegas, in a $95 million floor deals. Bellevue, Expedia Inc., Washington, a Washington, DC-based firm that was split off from Microsoft Corp. at the end of last year, on Monday reported that it had purchased two online tour operators in distinct deals.
Travelscape.com spokesperson, who has signed reduced-price collective agreements with more than 1,200 properties in 240 towns around the world, said the business will remain under its current directors. EXEDEDIA also purchased VacationSpot.com Inc. for $82 million, an on-line booking service for holiday houses, condos and bed-and-breakfast businesses around the world. "Combining VacationSpot.com's wide and unparalleled range of excursions, Travelscape.com's discount prices and Expedia's list of hostels makes the biggest and most convincing accommodation offer on the Internet," said Richard Barton, Expedia's CEO and CIO.
Travelscape.com tried to go private last year, but cancelled registrations in August when the tech stock markets stalled.
